Location:Sandgate Lane, Storrington, West Sussex OS map reference: TQ 106 145 Opening Times:The site has free open access everyday of the year from dawn till dusk. Sorry, FISHING and CYCLING are not permitted on the park.
This 30 acre site, also known as Heath Common, is a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI). This secluded area sitting on a bed of Greensand, is a mixture of ancient and mixed woodland, willow carr, wet and dry heathland, species-rich grassland and ponds. A lot of the Park is dominated by Rhododendron understorey which since 1991 has been gradually removed to be replaced by native flora over time. The remnant Wet Heathland is a great example, which was rejuvenated in 2004 by a clearance of encroached vegetation and Rhododendron.
The four acidic ponds – Armstrong Pond, Bracken Pond, Badger Pond and Hidden Pond – sit on the boundaries of the site and are linked by streams. Armstrong Pond is named after the previous owner of part of the site which was passed over to Horsham District Council to become part of the Park. The Sandgate Conservation Society has been working with Horsham District Council to develop the site back to its former state with volunteer days over the winter months. The work done by the Society has transformed the Park from overgrown woodland ravaged by non-native species to the beautiful area it is now and the potential of the site in the future. Facilities:Sandgate Park can be seen along a range of easy access footpaths and bridges. Unfortunately, there is no specific parking facility, but nearby Sullington Warren car park is only a 5 minute walk from the site entrance.
