Sandgate Park covers an area of 30 acres that used to be part of parkland in a 4000 acre estate, stretching from Storrington to Washington. Sandgate Park has been owned by the Council since 1974 and has been actively managed by the Countryside Services Unit since the Great Storm of 1987. Most of the estate was purchased by Halls Aggregates Ltd / RMC in 1946 and the underlying sands have been exploited over much of the area since then. The northern section was left undisturbed and in 1968, 40 acres were designated as 'white land' in the Storrington local plan, with restrictions on development. In 1974 Horsham District Council acquired 16.5 acres of this 'white land' (16 Acre Wood) as public open space. This area is subject to a covenant resticting public access until such time as RMC consider access to be safe and desirable, and today this is a major constraint on the site. In 1983, 8 acres to the east of 16 Acre Wood was conveyed to the Council under a Section 52 Agreement from a company developing low density residential properties on adjoining land. In 1987 a further 5 acres to the north were acquired from the Armstrong family under a Section 52 Agreement.
